- DIED. Clement F. Haynsworth Jr., 77, federal appeals-court
- judge whose nomination by Richard Nixon to the U.S. Supreme
- Court was rejected by the Senate in 1969; in Greenville, S.C.
- Although the Senate Judiciary Committee voted for Haynsworth's
- nomination to a seat vacated by Abe Fortas, the full Senate
- turned him down 55 to 45 after civil rights groups and labor
- charged he was insensitive to minorities and working people. He
- continued to serve as chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals
- for the Fourth Circuit before retiring to senior judge status
- in 1981.
